How To Reverse Engineer Your Competitors Backlink Structure

by Joel Walters

Building quality backlinks to your website can be a very time consuming and tedious task. Have you ever looked at your competitors on the first page of Google, Yahoo and MSN and wonder how they got their top rankings?

If there was a was a formula and a tool that told you how many backlinks your competitors sites have, where they come from and exactly how you can replicate their link structure and improve it to out rank them, would you want to know about it?

I’m going to share with you how you can do this, and you may be surprised how easy it is. The SEO Quake tool bar for Firefox could be the most valuable addition to your arsenal of Internet Marketing secret ninja weapons. Assuming you are using the Firefox browser, the first step is to go and download the SEO Quake Toolbar, which is an add-on for firefox. Once you have installed the tool bar, lets have a look at what you can do with it. Do a Google search for the keyword you want to rank for. I’ve used “mind map matrix” in this example.

So looking at the list of Google results you’ll see the SEO Quake Tool bar underneath each result.  You can then look at some interesting information about the top ranked sites. The paramaters we’ll look at now are the page rank, links to the page and links to the domain. Click on one of the websites on the 1st page of Google, then on the SEO Quake tool bar at the top, click on the Yahoo links tab which is displayed as L (links to the page) or LD (links to the domain).

If you click twice on the links tab, you’ll now be in the Yahoo Site Explorer page. Here you’ll see the backlinks  pointing to your competitors site. So going for quality high page rank links first, click on the question mark next to PR (page rank) at the top on the line that says SORT. Then click on the PR arrow that’s pointing down. This will re-order the results so it displays from the highest page rank backlinks to the lowest.

Next, picking the sites that have a relevant topic and high page rank first, right click  on the site and open it in a new tab. You’re now at the site where your competitors backlink comes from. If it’s a blog, they have probably left a comment, so you can do the same. If it’s a forum you could make a post with a link to your website, and if it’s a website with a resources or a links page, you can add your website in there etc…

Once you have left your link, go back to the Yahoo Site Explorer page and repeat the process for the next website. And so on. When you gone through all the quality links, go back to the Google Results and repeat the process for the next website, and the next one, until you have replicated all the highly relevant and high page backlinks from your top 10 competitors, or even top 20 – 30. You will have effectively reverse engineered the best backlinks from all your top competitors.

Dude, totally there. But I noticed that I can do this all for my main page and it will rank. Probably better for the top pages of each “silo” but my main page has tons of links already and tends to rank better, so should I try to do links for all my key word phrases to the main page, or to the sub pages at the top of the “silo”?

Hi Joe, your main page is crankin, well done. You should definitely do some more deep linking, by getting links to your sub pages, which can be achieve by social bookmarking, article submission and posting at forums.
